Awareness of toxin-free children’s products is growing – and independent product testing plays a crucial role in raising awareness. In the latest issue of the ÖKO-TEST magazine (05/2025), various sidewalk chalks were examined for potential harmful substances. Neogrün’s colorful scribble chalk was among the tested products.

What Was Tested?

The focus of the investigation was on critical ingredients such as carcinogenic aromatic amines, which can result from certain dyes, as well as heavy metals and allergenic and carcinogenic dispersion paints. Such substances could be absorbed by children through skin contact or inhalation. ÖKO-TEST often applies stricter standards in its assessments than those required by law and conducts independent testing in specialized laboratories.

The aim is to provide consumers with well-founded information to support conscious purchasing decisions – especially for products intended for the youngest users.

Details About the Test Report

Under the title “Does Sidewalk Chalk Still Contain Carcinogenic Dyes?”, ÖKO-TEST published the results. A total of 20 products were tested. The range of results varied from highly recommended products to chalks that were criticized for containing harmful substances.

The complete test report, including all details and evaluations, is available on the official ÖKO-TEST website.

Further Award from “spiel gut”

Independent of the current test, our colorful scribble chalk had already been evaluated by the renowned “spiel gut” initiative and awarded the well-known seal. The organization honors toys that meet particularly high standards for quality, safety, and educational value. Here too, an independent assessment by experts and children is highly valued.

Our Commitment to Safe Creative Materials

At neogrün, the health of children and the protection of the environment are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we develop our products consciously and with great care. While we are pleased with independent testing results, we would like to point out that the official evaluation can only be taken from the full test report by ÖKO-TEST.
